Dahir Gelle quits race for Somali President

Saturday May 14, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - On the eve of presidential election night in Somalia, Dahir Mohamud Gelle announced that he was quitting the presidential race.

Gelle made the announcement on his Facebook page, where he thanked supporters and parliamentarians.

‎"I officially announce that I am not running for the presidential election of the Federal Republic of Somalia in this election, and I will continue my efforts to direct and develop Somali politics. I am especially grateful to the parliamentary candidates who stood by me closely during our campaign," said Dahir Mohamud Geelle. ‎

The former information minister said that he would continue to make Somali politics more inclusive.

Gelle did not immediately endorse another candidate for the presidency.

Gelle dropped out of the race a day after two other candidates, Abdikarim Guled and Abdinasir Abdulle, withdrew their presidency bids and threw their support behind Abdirahman Abdishakur.

Lawmakers will converge on Afisioni Tent in Mogadishu's international airport on Sunday to elect the country's 10th President since independence. The election has been delayed for over a year and a half.
