Somalia: IFJ dismayed by 'serial killing of Journalists'

International Federation of Journalists - Following the killing of yet another Somali journalist, Ali Ahmed Abdi, the global media rights body -- International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) -- on Monday expressed “total dismay over the serial killing of Journalists” in Somalia, PANA reports.

The latest killing followed the “brutal murder” of another Somali media executive, Abukar Hassan Mahamoud, barely a week ago.

According to IFJ, three Somali journalists have been killed since the start of this year and Abdi becomes the 30th journalist murdered in Somalia since 2007.

Abdi, aged 26 who worked once with Radio Galkayo, was said to have been shot and killed on 4 March by hooded gunmen while walking in the Raac neighbourhood of northern Galkayo in the Mudag region of Somalia.

In a statement issued by its Africa Office, the IFJ said the “unprecedented and unabated killings” of Somali journalists must be stopped.

“The unprecedented killings of journalists in Somalia is totally disheartening and depicts an act of barbarism from misguided elements on innocent working citizens,' remarked Gabriel Baglo, the Director of IFJ Africa Office.

“These coward killers who are bent on undermining all acts of civility must be tracked down and brought to justice with immediate effect,” he added.

The IFJ further renewed its call on the Transitional Somali Government, the International Community and the African Union in particular, “to act with tenacity in guaranteeing the protection of lives and property in Somalia.”
