Mogadishu - Clashes in the Somali capital Mogadishu between government forces and Islamist insurgents have left at least 17 dead. Over 30 people were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Among those injured are civilians caught in the crossfire.

The Somali army raided and closed down three independent radio stations after the fighting. Journalists say the raids were reprisals for radio reports about looting by government soldiers.

Islamist rebels have been staging regular attacks against Somalia's government forces and Ethiopian soldiers since they were ousted from power in December 2006. More than 6,000 people have died since.
