Jowhar, Somalia (HOL) - The Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) which controls the city of Jowhar, the capital of Lower Shebelle, has imposed a curfew on the city to increase security in the city.Acting Chairman of the UIC for Lower Shebelle region Mr. Sheik Adam Ahmed Hefow said the curfew which started 9pm and ended 4am aims at increasing security in the city which lately has witnessed several violent acts.
Sheik Hefow said that there have been armed groups who pretend to represent UIC forces and commit illegal act in the city. He added that after senior UIC member held an urgent meeting to discuss the issue, they decided to impose curfew on the city.
“We call on the residents of Jowhar to work with the UIC forces to ensure the security of the residents of the city” said Mr. Hefow who spoke to the residents of city through the media last night.
UIC forces were conducting security patrols last night with armoured trucks and on foot. It is not known yet if they arrested any people who violated the curfew.
Jowhar was under Transitional Federal Government (TFG) appointed administration before they were ousted by UIC forces.
