The Power of Innovation
The treatment of gastrointestinal cancers involves a multifaceted approach: surgery, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy, which includes chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies. These treatments, utilized at various stages of the disease, have revolutionized patient outcomes over the past decade. The five-year survival rate for colorectal cancer patients, for instance, has risen to 65%, a significant improvement from the almost 12% rate for pancreatic cancer, one of the most formidable cancers, up from just 5% twenty years ago.
Professor
of Medical Oncology, Hüseyin Engin, a key player in our team
specializing in gastrointestinal cancers, underscores the progress made.
"We can now treat colorectal cancer, the most prevalent
gastrointestinal cancer, with high success rates using targeted therapy.
This innovative approach targets specific abnormalities in cancer
cells, effectively halting their growth and spread. Additionally, our
radiation oncologists employ MRIdian radiotherapy for pancreatic cancer
treatment. This groundbreaking technology enables real-time
visualization and tracking of soft tissues and tumors, allowing for an
increased radiation dose, yielding better results with minimal toxicity
and side effects."
Sumaya's Triumph: A Story of Resilience and Recovery
Colorectal cancer often presents with altered bowel movements, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, cramping, and vomiting. Sumaya, a 63-year-old from Somalia, experienced these symptoms
before being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Faced with an inoperable
tumor and the daunting prospect of chemotherapy and radiation before surgery, her brother sought a second opinion from Acıbadem Hospital in Turkey, where he had previously received world-class treatment for a urological issue.
Entrusting
her care to Professor Hüseyin Engin, Sumaya embarked on a course of
immunotherapy, a treatment suitable for some patients with advanced
colorectal cancer. This innovative approach uses specific medicines to
destroy cancer cells by activating the immune system to recognize and
attack foreign substances, thereby eradicating cancer via immune
responses. Sumaya's journey was marked by resilience, and after six
months of treatment, her tumor had completely disappeared. Overwhelmed
with relief, Sumaya shared, "After completing all the treatment steps, I
was overcome with tears of hope and relief. I knew I had made the right
decision. I have now been living cancer-free for the past two years. I
am immensely grateful to all the physicians and staff at Acıbadem."
