MOGADISHU (HOL) - Former MP Omar Mohamud Mohamed Filish has been appointed as the new mayor of Mogadishu and Banaadir Regional Governor to replace immediate former office holder Abdirahman Omar Osman Yarisow who died early this month following a terror attack in his office.

Filish was endorsed in a cabinet meeting today to take charge of the city administration and the larger Banaadir region. President Mohamed Farmaajo described Filish as a competent and capable leader to steer the administration and development of the city.

Yarisow was appointed January 29, 2018 to serve as Mogadishu Mayor and Banaadir Regional Administration (BRA) Governor after a stint as information minister in Prime Minister Hassan Khaire’s cabinet.

The cabinet also approved major changes in the security sector sending home army chief Dahir Adan ElmiIndhaQarshe who took up the position August 2018. He was replaced by General Odowaa Yusuf Raage.

Fahad Yasin was elevated to director general of the intelligence agency NISA while Abdi Hassan Hajar was moved from the military to head the police force. MahadAbdirahman Adan was endorsed to head the custodial services.
