Madobe who is heading for the second term as leader of the southerly Somali state garnered 56 votes out of the possible 73 with his closest challenger Anab Mohamed Dahir getting 17 votes. Mohamud Mohamed Omar got only one vote.

The election of Madobe marks a key milestone in the battle for the Jubbaland which has roped in regional and international actors.

Kenya which has troops in Kismayu under AMISOM has been backing Madobe while Ethiopia has been in support of Federal Government propped candidates.

Meanwhile the parallel parliament has ‘elected’ Abdirashid Hidig as ‘president’.
