MOGADISHU (HOL) - The World Food Programme (WFP) has today denied claims of distributing expired relief food to Somali nationals.

This comes a day after Somali authorities seized allegedly expired foodstuff at Mogadishu's Aden Adde Airport.

The consignment was reportedly on transit to drought hit districts of  Bardere and Garbahaarey in Gedo Region.

The head of WFP Somalia Communications Department, Laylo Ali told government media that the UN agency  was not in possession of any expired food stuff and that investigations were underway to determine if the food had been poorly stored or damaged.

“We do not believe that any of the food in our Mogadishu facilities is past its expiration date, but are checking whether any of the commodities may have been improperly stored and damaged,” said Ali.

The consignment was exhibited and on further examination by health experts, it was found not fit for human consumption.

'We are aware that our first priority is to provide safe and quality rations to our beneficiaries', Ali added.
