22 Kenyans charged in Somalia

TWENTY-TWO Kenyans were charged yesterday in Somalia with being in the country illegally.

They are accused of working for a foreign software company without a permit.

The names and gender of the Kenyans in detention were not immediately available.

They denied the charges in a Mogadishu court.

Deputy State Attorney Mohamed Hassan said the 22 violated the country’s labour laws.

They worked for software company Liber Link.

“The National Prosecutor’s Office accused the company of violating the Foreign Workers Act. The company has also not followed the due procedure in employing foreigners,” Hassan said.

“The Banadir court found out after investigating that the Kenyans had no permits,” Mogadishu court judge said.

Justice Hashi Elmi of the Banadir law courts in Central Mogadishu has postponed the hearing until today, when the Kenyan embassy is expected to hire a lawyer.
