Mama Ngina Kenyatta recognised as African living legend

Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been given a Living Legend award at a gala dinner in South Africa.

The award recognises the continent’s heroines, especially those who participated in Africa's liberation struggle.

Mama Ngina was recognised for her role during Kenya’s fight for independence that included serving a jail term alongside others opposed to British rule.

The award, by the African Women of Excellence, was to be conferred on her on Thursday evening during a dinner party hosted for First Ladies from Africa.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, who is in Johannesburg, will receive the award on behalf of her mother-in-law.

The First Ladies are in South Africa for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Organsation of African First Ladies Against HIV/Aids (OAFLA).

Besides the Awards ceremony and the OAFLA summit, Margaret will on Saturday launch a book authored by a Kenyan Litha Musyimi-Ogana.

The book is titled 'True Story of Women Peace Train from Kampala to Johannesburg'.

Margaret was accompanied by her daughter Ngina Kenyatta.

She was received at the Oliver Tambo International Airport by senior South African government officials and Kenya’s High Commissioner Jean Kamau.
