When Meru Governor Peter Munya visited miraa growing areas in northern Meru at the weekend, he was greeted by downcast  farmers and quiet neigbourhoods, weighed down by decreased business.

Wherever he visited to commission police stations and road construction projects, waiting miraa  farmers wailed, asking him to save them from the United Kingdom’s ban on the crop that has fed the county’s economy for generations.

Bunch of miraa

When he arrived to lay the foundation for construction of a maternity wing at Kaelo Dispensary in Igembe North, the flower girls waiting to welcome him handed him a bouquet of flowers and a bunch of miraa, to underline the importance of the latter in their lives.

“The miraa dispute with the UK has taken a new turn. It is now a country versus country trade dispute. I have spoken with President Uhuru Kenyatta about it and we agreed to meet, but the Mpeketoni attacks led to a postponement,” he said.

Munya said he would be meeting Uhuru soon, adding that they intend to petition the World Trade Organisation to present the case.
