The Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmud has told legislators in the capital Mogadishu that they must pass tough laws to defeat the scourge of terrorism.Speaking at the commemorative event on Wednesday for soldiers killed during an attack by Al-Shabab at the parliament building last month, President Mahmud has called for MPs to support a draft anti terrorism act which his cabinet had championed.Mr. Mahmud reiterated his government’s stance against all that the Islamist group stood for and vowed that they will be defeated.
He however warned: We cannot defeat the kind of terrorism killing our people without building the legal framework to deal with perpetrators.
Somalia, , has no legislation against terrorism.
Al-Shabab had claimed responsibility for the attack on the parliament building in Mogadishu which killed several people in May.
The group which has lost key strongholds across the country still controls large swathes of Southern Somalia and retains the capacity to launch sporadic attacks on Mogadishu and surrounding areas.
Somalia has been without a functioning government since the overthrow of President Siad Barrie in 1991.
