While hiking more than 200 miles on a California trail this summer, a Jerome man decided to take on a project that had global impact.
Almost 30 years ago, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. Thanks to childhood immunizations, that disease has been wiped out in most of the world.
Last year 233,000 polio cases were reported in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Somalia.
Donor Carl Nellis says, "The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is matching $2 for every $1 raised through Rotary. So that's the reason for now, and that's the reason for doing polio."
Nellis raised $5,000 for the Jerome Rotary Club. With the Gates Foundation matching funds, that makes his total donation $15,000 to battle polio.
