Presidential candidate Musalia Mudavadi conceded defeat Friday as
tallying after the Monday March 4 General Election showed two rivals had
secured most of the vote.
The Amani coalition flag bearer was third in the presidential results
ranking, with a huge margin between him and the leading candidates
Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. He becomes the second of eight
contestants to make a concession.
“In every competition there must be a winner,” said Mudavadi. "We (Amani coalition) are not that winner," said Mudavadi
When he made the announcement Friday morning, Mudavadi and his
running mate Jeremiah Kioni had garnered a total of 356,294 votes while
his key rivals had 4,787,334 (Uhuru) and 4,167,054 (Raila).
Mudavadi, 52, congratulated Uhuru and Raila for their performance,
and urged Kenyans to remain calm even as IEBC finalised tallying of the
results. He also congratulated all the candidates who had successfully
made it through the election process.
There were six elective posts being contested in Monday’s General
Election: President, Senator, Governor, Member of National Assembly,
Women representative and County ward representative.
The eight in the race for State House were, in alphabetical order:
Mohammed Dida (ARK), Martha Karua (Narc-Kenya), Peter Kenneth
(Eagle/KNC), Uhuru Kenyatta (Jubilee/TNA), James ole Kiyiapi (RBK),
Musalia Mudavadi (Amani/UDF), Paul Muite (Safina) and Raila Odinga
(Cord/ODM). Peter Kenneth conceded defeat when provisional results
showed him trailing.
