Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said Tuesday from Kampala regional efforts would help ensure security in East Africa.
Kenyatta met Tuesday in Kampala with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for his inaugural visit to Uganda. Kenyatta was inaugurated as president in April.
Kenyatta praised the work of Ugandan defense forces in helping to prop up the central government in Mogadishu. Kenyan forces are deployed alongside their Ugandan counterparts in a U.N.-African Union peace mission in Somalia.
"It is an honor for our men and women in uniform to be working together to bring peace to Somalia, which has faced war and conflict for the last 20 years," Kenyatta was quoted by The (Nairobi) Daily Nation newspaper as saying.
Somalia has struggled to maintain political momentum in the face of mounting threats from al-Shabaab, a militant group with ties to al-Qaida.
Kenyatta said his administration would work to ensure broad-based integration among leaders from the East African community.
Uganda, for its part, has played a role in working to establish peace in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
