Ambassador Annadif praised the estimable work of the Kenyan troops
serving in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) who have
bravely worked alongside the Somali National Army and other troops
contributing countries in securing and stabilising parts of Somalia.
"On behalf of AMISOM, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to the
Government and the people of Kenya as they celebrate half a century of
self-rule," adding that "As AMISOM we appreciate and recognize the
sacrifices made by men and women from Kenya to bring peace to our
brothers and sisters of Somalia as they rebuild their country", said
Ambassador Annadif.
On 21st September, unidentified gunmen attacked the upmarket Westgate
shopping mall in Nairobi. During this terrorist attack, the region, the
continent and the international community supported the resolve of the
Kenyan Government and its people to continue defeating terrorism. The
solidarity, the courage, determination and resilient spirit exhibited by
the people of Kenya at that trying moment demonstrated that acts of
terror will never disrupt the principles of the country as established
by its founding heroes.
Kenya was the fourth Troop Contributing Country to join the African
Union Mission in Somalia to support peace operations in the country. The
Kenyan Defence Forces joined AMISOM in February 22, 2012 and is
currently deployed in parts of Southern Somalia.
