One person was seriously injured yesterday  when an explosive device went off next to a voter registration centre at Ifo refugee camp in Daadab district.

The device had been burried at the ifo bore hole 5 centre which is inhabited by kenyan  Somalis. Daadab DC Albert Kimathi said the  improvised explosive device had been neatly planted  right where the voter registration was taking place.

“At around 10 am  just as the clerks were going on with the exercise of registering voters, an explosion occurred right where they were seriously injuring one woman.

She has been rushed to hospital where she is receiving treatment,” said Kimathi. The District Commissioner  said that that the explosion could have caused a lot of damage had it been strong.

“It could have been more disastrous had it been a strong one.  We are following up the matter in a bid to apprehend those behind it, added the DC

The two police officers who were manning the registration centre were not hurt in the incident According to a source who spoke to the Star on phone  from the camp and who witnessed the incident, those who planted the explosive must have been targeting those who were on the queue waiting to register.

Daadab district, which hosts the refugee camps, had been calm with no insecurity incident reported. A few days ago police in Amuma Fafi district arrested six Al Shabaab suspects and recovered two guns, three grenades and 84 bullets from in the car they were traveling in.

According to the provincial security intelligence committee the weapons were intended for use in error attacks  across the region during  this  festive season.

The suspects, all of the of them of Somali origin, were yesterday charged in a Garissa court and denied all the charges against them.
