At least 11 Somali civilians have been killed and 26 others injured after clashes broke out between government troops and drought victims at a refugee camp near the capital, Mogadishu, Press TV reports.

The clashes erupted in the Hodan district of Southern Mogadishu Monday morning when Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) troops tried to loot humanitarian food aid provided to famine-stricken Somali civilians.

Thirty tons of relief food have reportedly been pillaged during the incident, with a number of Somali lawmakers denouncing acts of looting and violence and demanding punishment for the culprits.

According to the World Food Program, drought and the famine have affected more than 11.8 million people in the Horn of Africa and created a triangle of hunger where the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia meet.

Somalia has been the hardest-hit country by what is being described as the worst drought in the Horn of Africa in 60 years.

The United Nations has warned that more than thirteen children out of every 10,000 aged less than five die in the Somalia famine zone every day.
