A resident and a Nairobi-based diplomat say a Kenyan military helicopter has crashed near the border with Somalia on the same day Kenya launched an operation against al-Shabab militants.

The resident and diplomat said the helicopter apparently had a mechanical malfunction and was not shot down. No casualties were reported but the conditions of the pilots were not immediately known. The resident requested anonymity for fear of reprisals. The diplomat's employer does not allow him to be identified.

The helicopter crashed in the Kenyan town of Liboi, about 10 miles (20 kilometers) from the border. Kenya's government spokesman, Alfred Mutua, said earlier that Kenyan troops "are pursuing al-Shabab across the border."
