BRAMPTON, Ont. (CTV)— A Toronto man facing terrorism charges after allegedly planning to join a group linked to al Qaeda will find out today if he will be released on bail.
Police allege Mohamed Hersi planned to join Somali militant group al-Shabaab, which Canada has labelled a terrorist organization.
The 25-year-old was arrested last month en route to Cairo at Toronto's Pearson airport and is due in a Brampton court today for a bail hearing.
Police have revealed little about him but say he is a Canadian citizen who quit his job in preparation for the trip.
Al-Shabaab is an al Qaeda-linked militant group trying to overthrow Somalia's transitional government.
Police suspect several young Canadians have gone to Somalia to join the group in recent years.
