NAIROBI Oct 7 (Reuters) - Pirates have seized a fishing vessel, thought to be Taiwanese, off the coast of Mauritius, an east African maritime official said on Thursday.

"It was taken 200 nautical miles north of Mauritius," said Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the East African Seafarers' Assistance Programme.

The vessel had 14 crew members, but there was not much additional information on the seizure, Mwangura said.

The lack of an effective central government in the Horn of Africa country has resulted in an escalation of piracy off the east African coast. Somali pirates are holding at least 19 ships and have made millions of dollars in ransom from others. (Reporting by Helen Nyambura-Mwaura; Editing by Richard Lough and Noah Barkin)
