At least 5 people have been killed and 10 others injured as heavy clashes continue unabated in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu.

The clashes erupted Thursday evening in the city's Hodon district where mortars landed on civilian residents, causing causalities. Mortars also hit a refugee camp in the southern part of Mogadishu and claimed two lives. Four others civilians suffered injuries in the attack, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Separately, three people were killed and 6 others wounded in clashes between African Union (AU) troops and militants in Mogadishu.

The recent developments come as part of the anti-government al-Shabab fighters' vow to defeat the interim Western-backed government of Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed by the end of Ramadan -- the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Somalia has lacked an effective government since the 1991 ousting of former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, which paved the way for factional clashes that have defied numerous bids to restore stability.
