Somalis living in Kansas City metro area is in the final phase of organizing an event to commemorate June 26 and July 1.  It was June 26, 1960 when the national flag was first erected in an independent Somali territory following the northern regions’ Independence from Britain. Four days later on July 1, 1960, the southern regions acquired their independence from Italy and the forefathers merged the two territories to form the Republic of Somalia.

“Despite the bad picture coming out from parts of the homeland, the forefathers who shed their blood and shielded us from the agony of colonization deserve to be remembered in this very important day”, said Jawahir Aden, a Political Science student at the University of Missouri. “They would be devastated to find out that division, nepotism and anarchy overshadowed the unity, nationalism and the freedom they paid so much to bring. But we are still a nation, still hopeful and still celebrating for the Independence Day.” she added.

The event will be held on Wednesday night July 1st, 2009 in Gregg Community Center 1600 E 17th Ter, Kansas City, MO 64108. It is open to the public and will be filled with activities including traditional food and cultural demonstrations, historical presentations and much more.
