The new Somalian President Sharif Ahmed has asked his fellow African leaders for military assistance. He made his appeal at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, soon after Islamic fighters made significant advances in Somalia. After the departure of Ethiopian troops, Islamist militias have brought increasinly large areas under their control.

The summit in Addis Ababa was concluded today, after being extended by one day on Tuesday in an attempt to reach agreement on the further course of the African Union. Libyan leader Muammar Khadhaffi proposed creating an organisation with a strong central authority modeled on the European Union. However, other leaders were strongly opposed to this idea, fearing they might lose their sovereignty.

The African government leaders did agree on renaming the Commission of the African Union, which in future will be called the AU Authority.
