Kenyan leader appeals for reconstruction of Somalia

APA-Nairobi (Kenya) - President Mwai Kibaki has appealed to the international community to fufil Pits pledge to reconstruct Somalia in spite of moves by the different armed factions to frustrate efforts being made by the transitional government to unite the country.

Kibaki at the weekend urged the warring factions to understand that the only way to peace and prosperity for the Somali people is through dialogue and not armed struggle.

A Presidential statement issued here said Kenya has over the years stood by the people of Somalia and will be at the forefront in mobilizing regional support for that country.

The President however noted that recent developments towards lasting peace in the Great Lakes Region and the Horn of Africa were encouraging.
