Islamic Courts Militia Takes Control of Manaas in Bay region

Baidao, Somalia (HOL) - Armed militia belonging to the Union of Islamic Courts has seized control of Manaas base on the outskirts of Baidao city, the capital of Bay region where Somalia’s transitional parliament is seated. The seizure of the base occurred this morning.

A spokesman for the Union of Islamic Courts’ militia Mr. Abdirahin Isse Addow said that their militia seized control of the base as well as ammunition and weapons.

So far there is no confirmation or denial from the TFG regarding the claim of ICU. Armed militia belonging the ICU, however, have recently taken control of several areas in central and southern Somalia from TFG troops. Some of these areas have had leaders appointed by the TFG.

If it is true that ICU militia have taken control of the Manaas base, it will be an important development since the base housed TFG troops and is very close to the city of Baidao.
