A police dog handler was stabbed three times in the head yesterday by a knifeman who also wounded several other officers.

Officers were answering a 999 call of a serious assault shortly after 2pm at a block of flats in Liden, Swindon, when they discovered the man brandishing a knife.

The attacker, who is thought to be of Somali origin, fled the block and lashed out at the officers when they chased him.

The dog handler, believed to be in his 30s, received three stab wounds to the head and face and was taken to the town's Great Western Hospital, where his injuries were described as not life-threatening

The remaining officers, several of whom received superficial injuries, arrested a 26-year-old man at the scene.

Wiltshire police sealed off the block of flats as they began an investigation of the incident.

Kevin Maidment, the force's acting chief superintendent, said: "These officers acted quickly and effectively to ensure that the male was located and arrested preventing further serious injuries to members of the public or officers."
