  • The World Food Programme said today insecurity was threatening its operations in Middle and Lower Juba regions of southern Somalia and appealed to local authorities to do all they could to assist WFP staff in delivering food to those most in need.
  • WFP said that it had temporarily relocated 2 international staff by air from the town of Buale on Monday in the wake of an attack apparently targeting WFP staff on the road to Buale airport on 27 November.
  • An improvised explosive device set off by remote control exploded on the road from Buale town to the airport shortly after a car carrying WFP staff passed the blast site. There were no casualties and no damage to the vehicle.
  • WFP stresses that WFP is outside politics and does not engage in any activities that would harm the population of Somalia. Anything the Somali people do to help WFP is a direct help to their own communities. WFP’s Buale office is still functioning with national staff. Iinternational staff will return once security improves.
  • WFP will do its utmost to continue its operations from Buale and is committed to helping the people of southern Somalia. But the shortage of staff makes this task even more difficult than normal.
  • Any further security incidents may make it impossible to help people in Middle and Lower Juba where WFP is the largest humanitarian organization still operating.
  • WFP urges all parties to help both humanitarian workers and assistance to move freely and without hindrance. WFP’s office in Buale organizes the delivery of food to between 200,000 and 300,000 people in need in Middle and Lower Juba each month.
  • WFP works with authorities on the ground and local communities to assist the most vulnerable through supplementary feeding program, food for work, food for education and general food distribution for displaced persons. WFP works with eight NGO partners in Middle and Lower Juba.
  • As an impartial humanitarian organization, WFP’s sole aim is to deliver assistance to people in need.
  • Two ships loaded with a total of 12,000 metric tons of WFP food – enough to feed 720,000 people for a month – have arrived in the southern port of Merka since 23 November. One was offloaded without incident and the other is currently offloading.
