Not only do the Haalands raise goats, but they also eat goat meat, which Carmen Haaland described as a lean meat with no marbling or fat. The flavor is nondescript, she said.
"It tastes like whatever you fix it with," she said.
Her husband said research has shown that goat meat is ideal for diabetics.

The Haalands started raising goats about 20 years ago because they wanted to control weeds on their farm. At one time they had about 265 females, but they've cut back.
Goats and cattle can share a pasture and will eat noxious weeds that cattle don't, Curtis Haaland said. Leafy spurge is the goats' "ice cream in the spring," he said, adding that they also eat Canadian thistle, wormwood sage and yellow toadstool.
Fencing expenses can increase with goats, however, because they will walk through the barbed wire fences that contain cattle. Goats require electric or woven wire fencing.
