NAIROBI (WFP) – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a contribution from the Government of Egypt of 250 metric tons of rice valued at US $ 104,278 to feed children in schools and provide social support in Somalia "This is the second donation from Egypt to WFP Somalia so far this year and WFP applauds our growing partnership," said WFP Somalia Country Director Peter Goossens. "Somalia is having a turbulent year so these contributions will help people who are most in need of assistance."
WFP Somalia's school feeding programme increases enrolment, stabilizes attendance, reduces short-term hunger and improves learning. WFP currently supports some 140 schools with 40,000 school children and plans to reach additional 160 schools by the end of next year.
Social support activities include food for Mother and Child Health Centres, therapeutic and supplementary feeding centres, tuberculosis and HIV treatment centres and care institutions for children. Under social support, WFP feeds close to 100,000 people in various parts of Somalia.
WFP assistance targets some 1.2 million people across Somalia in 2007, especially in areas where there are critical food shortages and concentrations of vulnerable displaced people.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency: on average, each year, we give food to 90 million poor people to meet their nutritional needs, including 58 million hungry children, in 80 of the world's poorest countries. WFP – We Feed People.
