The number of refugees requesting asylum in the Netherlands last year totalled 13,330, according to the UN’s refugee organisation UNHCR.

That is 11% down on the 2009 figure and more than double the 5% drop recorded in the 44 industrialised nations studied in the report, the UN body said.

The Netherlands is the ninth most popular destination among the 44 countries. Most came from Somalia, (3,372) followed by Iraq and Afghanistan, both with just over 1,300.

Almost halved

Over the past 10 years, the number of refugees coming to the west is down 42%, the UN organisation says.

In 2010, 358,800 people applied for asylum in the 44 countries studied, of whom 270,000 requested help in Europe.

Nevertheless, the US was the most popular destination last year with 55,000 requests. France, Germany and Sweden are the most popular European countries.
