I dedicate this poem to my Mother Maryan Hagi Danan who died in Mogadishu in Feb. 1998 But I say Happy Mothers Day to all mothers in the world.

Source of love
Spring of joy
Beacon of Light
Rainbow of hope
My dear Mother

In love you conceived
In pain you laboured
In tears you suffered
In sweat you drowned
In joy you delivered
My dear Mother

With a passionate touch
You assuaged my tempers
Breast fed me to my fill
Buried me with kisses
And if I didn't fall asleep
You sang me Hubaaya Hubaaya

Without your mothering
Would have I felt human?
Would have I known peace?
Would I have tasted life?

Though you have passed away
I am still connected to you
Death can never separate us
Never can it break our bond
May your soul rest in peace

In another poem I wish to share the pain with the Somali mother in Somalia especially those who work as porters inside the Bakaaraha Market.

I AM A SINGLE MOTHER
I AM A SOMALI WIDOW
I AM A VICTIM OF WAR
IN A CROSS SHOOTING
I LOST MY HUSBAND

I TOIL HARD TO SURVIVE
I TOIL TO RAISE CHILDREN
BAKAARAHA IS MY MARKET
I WORK AS A XAMAALI

I CARRY HEAVY LOADS

SICK OR NOT SICK
I HAVE TO SPIN
A DAY OF NO JOB
IS A DAY OF NO INCOME

IN CASE ROCKETS LAND ON ME
NO ONE WOULD REPORT MY DEATH
A SCRATCH ON A MILITIA FIGHTER

GRABS MORE ATTENTION THAN ME
NO ONE WOULD BOTHER MY KIDS EITHER

THEY ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN KITTENS
LEFT BEHIND BY A STRAYED CAT

IN THE INTERNATIONAL RECORDS
I AM REGISTERED AS A HUMAN BEING
BUT IN THE STATISTICS OF SURVIVAL
I BELONG TO A DIFFERENT SPECIES
I AM A SOMALI MOTHER.
I AM A SINGLE MOTHER
