Mogadishu (HOL) – The United Kingdom has announced more than
$30 million in new funding to support Somalia’s security transition, backing
Somali forces and African Union partners in the fight against al-Shabaab.
In a statement issued Monday, the UK said the funding
package includes $8 million to the United Nations Support Office in Somalia
(UNSOS) and $22 million to the African Union Support to Somalia (AUSSOM), the
AU’s peace support operation.
The UK’s $8 million contribution to UNSOS will provide
Somali Security Forces with essential non-lethal support, including food
rations, tents, medical supplies, and casualty evacuation. UNSOS currently
supports 18,900 Somali National Army and police personnel. Since 2021, the UK
has contributed more than $58 million to the mission.
London also committed $22 million to AUSSOM to reinforce
Somalia’s transition to Somali-led security arrangements. AUSSOM plays a
central role in stabilising newly recovered areas, supporting Somali-led
operations, and reducing drivers of regional insecurity.
“The UK has been a committed partner to Somalia for over a
decade, recognising that its security is vital to regional stability and
prosperity. This contribution reflects our broader commitment to African-led
peace efforts, reinforcing our investment in a future where trade thrives,
communities flourish, and terrorism no longer threatens everyday life,” UK
Development Minister Baroness Chapman said.
The announcement was made as the UK co-hosted an AUSSOM
Donor Conference alongside Somalia, the African Union, and the UN on the
sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Since 2021, the UK has contributed nearly
$140 million to AUSSOM and its predecessor missions.
