Cairo (HOL) – Somali Minister of Defence Ahmed Moallim Fiqi
met with his Egyptian counterpart, General Abdel Majeed Saqr, and senior
Egyptian Armed Forces officers to discuss strengthening military cooperation
and promoting regional stability.
During the meeting in Cairo on Monday, Minister Fiqi praised
Egypt’s role in advancing peace and stability, stressing the two nations’
shared vision on strategic and mutual interests.
General Saqr reaffirmed Egypt’s readiness to deepen military
ties and confirmed that Egyptian troops contributing to the African Union
Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) will soon be deployed.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told the BBC that the
Egyptian contingent will take over Sector Five in the Middle Shabelle region,
replacing Burundian forces due to withdraw in the coming weeks. He said the
troops would be stationed between the districts of Balcad and Mahaday,
