Beledweyne (HOL) – At least one soldier was killed and five
civilians wounded on Sunday following a clash between two units of Somali
government forces in Beledweyne town, residents said.
The incident occurred after two National Guard soldiers
allegedly robbed a woman selling khat at the Darawiishta Market.
“Two National Guard soldiers robbed a woman who was selling
khat, and when they encountered other soldiers, they opened fire, killing one
and injuring another, as well as five civilians,” an eyewitness told HOL.
The clash comes amid a deteriorating security situation in
Beledweyne, where residents report frequent night-time robberies and a lack of
response from security forces to curb the violence.
Authorities in Beledweyne have not yet commented on the
incident.
