Las Anod (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre are expected to attend the inauguration of the
newly elected president of the Northeastern Somali administration, a senior
lawmaker said Monday.
Second Deputy Speaker of the Senate Abdullahi Timacadde
confirmed the two federal leaders will travel to Las Anod for the swearing-in
of President Abdikadir Ahmed Aw-Cali, widely known as Firdhiye. He was elected
on Aug. 30 as the region’s first president, alongside Deputy President
Abdirashid Yussuf Jibril.
Timacadde praised the federal government for what he
described as a key role in stabilizing the Sool, Sanaag and Buuhoodle regions
after months of unrest. He said the attendance of the president and prime
minister at the ceremony reflects their commitment to Somalia’s unity.
“The President and the Prime Minister have fulfilled their
national responsibility to protect the unity of the country,” Timacadde said.
He added that lawmakers from both houses of parliament,
representing Sool, Sanaag and Cayn, would work together to support the new
regional administration. According to Timacadde, past divisions among
politicians from the two regions will be overcome to ensure the administration
takes shape.
Timacadde, a former Puntland interior minister and once a
close ally of Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, has shifted his stance in
recent months to support the people of Sool in forming the new administration.
The creation of the Northeastern Somali administration marks
a significant political development after years of contested governance and
conflict in northern Somalia. The move is likely to reshape political alliances
and spark debate over federalism and territorial control in the country.
