Sana’a (HOL) — The Somali Embassy in Yemen has resumed
issuing passports after an eight-year suspension, addressing long-standing
demands from Somali citizens living in the country who have struggled to obtain
official travel documents.
Somali Ambassador to Yemen, Abdihakin Mohamed Ahmed,
announced the reopening of passport services, stating that Somali nationals
residing in Yemen can now apply directly through the embassy.
“After almost eight years, we have resumed issuing
passports, which is a right of every citizen. From now on, we will accept
applications from anyone whose Somali citizenship is verified,” Ambassador
Abdihakin said.
He noted that the move marks an important step in resolving
challenges faced by Somalis in Yemen, adding that the embassy will prioritize
verifying the identities of applicants to ensure transparency and
accountability in the process.
The development has been warmly welcomed by Somali residents
in Sana’a and other major Yemeni cities. Many students had been unable to obtain
passports during their studies, prompting years of appeals from the Somali
community.
Community representatives described the embassy’s decision
as a long-awaited success and a major relief for thousands of Somalis in Yemen.
