US embassy in Somalia limits services as U.S. government shutdown begins

Wednesday October 1, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — The U.S. Embassy in Somalia said Wednesday it is suspending some regular services after a budget stalemate in Washington forced a federal government shutdown.
In a message posted on X, the embassy said, “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information.” The mission added that it will maintain essential functions focused on the protection of U.S. citizens.
The move is expected to limit several routine services for Americans abroad, including non-emergency consular assistance and some administrative services, the embassy said. It did not provide a timeline for when full operations would resume.
Other U.S. missions in the Horn of Africa, including embassies in Ethiopia and Djibouti, have also scaled back services because of the funding lapse, according to statements from those missions and U.S. State Department advisories.
U.S. government shutdowns occur when Congress and the White House fail to pass appropriations bills. Such shutdowns typically halt or reduce federal services and payrolls, affecting government employees, public programs and U.S. diplomatic activity overseas.
Somali officials and community groups did not immediately respond to requests for comment. U.S. citizens in Somalia are advised to monitor official embassy channels for safety updates and follow local directions from Somali authorities.
