Mogadishu (HOL) — The Somali National Army (SNA) has issued a nationwide warning against civilians wearing or displaying military uniforms, insignia, or using vehicles belonging to the armed forces, saying such actions threaten public safety and national security.
In a statement released Saturday, the army command said that “any person found using these items without proper authorization will be subject to legal and disciplinary measures consistent with the laws governing the armed forces.” The SNA stressed that the ban applies to all military uniforms, ranks, and symbols exclusive to the Somali National Army.
Authorities said the directive is part of ongoing efforts to prevent militants and criminals from exploiting the appearance of official soldiers. “This decision aims to safeguard national security and preserve the integrity of the armed forces,” the statement added.
The warning follows an attack in which Al-Shabaab militants used a government military vehicle to carry out an attack on the Godka Jilicow detention facility in Mogadishu. The assault, which laid bare the weaknesses in the control of military equipment, prompted a government-wide security review.
In response, Mogadishu’s security agencies have intensified inspections of military vehicles across the capital. The Ministry of Internal Security has directed that “no privately owned garages or businesses shall modify, repair, or house Somali National Army vehicles without prior authorization.”
The SNA command also cautioned business owners and traders to avoid manufacturing or selling military clothing or insignia. “All commercial activities involving the sale or distribution of military-related materials are strictly prohibited,” the statement warned.
The army urged citizens to report any misuse of military uniforms or symbols, stressing the importance of public cooperation in protecting national security. The SNA command reiterated its commitment to discipline and accountability within the ranks, emphasizing that maintaining the integrity of the armed forces is essential to restoring stability in the country.
