Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
officially opened the 2nd East African Community Cooperation Conference
(EACON2025) in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
In his keynote address, President Mohamud highlighted
Somalia’s historic trade legacy and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to
advancing regional integration, economic growth, and peace across East Africa.
He emphasized that the core objective of the East African
Community (EAC) is achieving full integration in economic, social, and political
spheres, adding that Somalia’s membership would create new opportunities for
all partner states.
“The majority of expatriates working in Somalia today are
from East African countries. This is a clear indication of how the region has
become integrated and highlights the importance of Somalia’s active
participation in the EAC,” said President Hassan Sheikh.
The President also praised Somali entrepreneurs for their
significant contributions to national development through private investments
in education, health, and other essential services. He urged them to expand
their business partnerships with counterparts across the East African region.
The EACON2025 Summit, now in its second session in
Mogadishu, has brought together senior officials from EAC member states,
representatives from the Federal Government of Somalia, and regional business
leaders.
The conference aims to strengthen trade, investment, and
cross-border economic cooperation among member states.
Somalia became a full member of the East African Community
in March 2024, officially joining as the bloc’s eighth partner state.
