Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali police arrested 17 individuals,
including both soldiers and civilians, for violating security directives during
the 65th Independence Week celebrations in Mogadishu on Wednesday night.
According to the Banaadir Regional Police, the individuals
were detained across various districts in the capital for discharging live
ammunition—an act explicitly banned during national holidays due to safety
concerns.
“The individuals taken into custody are specifically accused
of violating a standing order that prohibits celebratory gunfire during festive
events, a practice that has in the past led to unnecessary casualties and
public panic,” the police said in a statement.
The arrests were carried out by the general command of the
Somali Police Force in coordination with other security agencies operating in
Mogadishu.
The Somali Police confirmed that investigations are underway
and that the detainees will face legal proceedings. “This proactive stance
reflects the government’s growing commitment to accountability and the rule of
law, particularly in cases that threaten public safety,” the police added.
All 17 suspects are expected to be brought before a court of
law to face charges related to their alleged actions.
June 26 marks the anniversary of British Somaliland’s
independence from colonial rule in 1960. The event preceded the unification
with the Trust Territory of Somalia—formerly Italian Somaliland—on July 1,
1960, to form the Somali Republic, a significant step toward realizing the
vision of Greater Somalia.
