Somaliland advocate Tibor Nagy resumes role at US State Department

Friday January 17, 2025

Hargeisa (HOL) – Former US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa and Ambassador to Guinea and Ethiopia, Tibor Nagy, has announced his return to the US State Department in a temporary role beyond his usual focus on African affairs.

Nagy, a long-term diplomat and outspoken advocate for the recognition of Somaliland, shared the news on his X account (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.

"Dear Friends, Adversaries, and Trolls - Looks like I'm going back to the US State Dept on Monday in a position which will be beyond just Africa.  So I'm stopping expressing my personal views until my temporary position finishes (probably in a few months). God bless you all and back soon!."

According to international media, former US Special Envoy for the Sahel Region, Dr. J. Peter Pham, is also reportedly returning to the State Department's Africa office. Pham has also been a vocal supporter of Somaliland's quest for recognition, frequently advocating for the cause on social media.

Both Nagy and Pham have consistently opposed the "Greater Somalia" policy, asserting that the United States is missing strategic opportunities by not recognizing Somaliland as an independent state. Nagy previously argued, "Trump's recognition of Somaliland is in the best interest of the United States."

Similarly, Pham has highlighted Somaliland's democratic achievements as bolstering its case for independence. "A smooth election in Somaliland will, in addition to its other achievements, undoubtedly strengthen its case in an overall policy review," Pham stated, referencing potential shifts in US foreign policy toward Somaliland.

The US must navigate its interests carefully in the Horn of Africa, according to the analysts. Somalia remains a strategic ally, and its geopolitical significance is amplified as China and Russia show increasing interest in the region.
