Kismayo (HOL) — Puntland has rejected comments made by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who recently praised Puntland’s military forces for their operations in the Bari region as they are engaged in combat against ISIS.
Mohamud Aydid Dirir, Puntland’s Minister of Information, blasted the Prime Minister’s remarks on Thursday, stating that while Puntland forces deserve recognition, the government must provide much-needed support in the form of military supplies, medical aid, heavy equipment, financial assistance, and lift the restrictions on critical development projects.
“The Prime Minister’s praise is misleading. Puntland’s forces are made up of our own people—heroes who have bravely taken the fight to the terrorists. There is no historical precedent for 12 terrorist groups detonating themselves in one place. What we need is constitutional support, which the people of Puntland are entitled to,” Minister Dirir stated.
Puntland’s forces have recently captured eight bases in the Bari region, formerly held by ISIS. These gains have drawn congratulations from both the Somali people and the international community. Minister Dirir thanked those who recognized Puntland’s troops' efforts in the ongoing battle.
In response to accusations that the federal government has obstructed development projects in Puntland, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre rejected these claims. He insisted that the federal government has not blocked any projects and that Puntland’s actions have hindered collaboration with federal agencies.
During a public address, the Prime Minister reiterated the federal government’s commitment to supporting Puntland’s forces in their fight against ISIS. He added that the government is ready to provide necessary assistance to aid Puntland’s efforts in the region.
