Somalia condemns UAE for inviting Somaliland leader to Global summit

    Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said his government will take action against the United Arab Emirates after it invited Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro to the World Governments Summit 2025 in Dubai this month.

    During the summit, President Irro urged the international community to recognize Somaliland as an independent country.

    “Somaliland is a region of Somalia, and we are addressing these concerns through dialogue,” Fiqi said, reiterating Mogadishu’s stance that Somaliland remains part of Somalia.

    Minister Fiqi downplayed the significance of his visit, comparing it to trips by its regional leaders to the United Arab Emirates. He also noted that the visit was similar to Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe’s recent trip to Kenya.

    “Somalia will not tolerate interference,” Fiqi said, adding that the government is taking steps to manage its relations with the UAE. He did not specify what measures were being considered.

    On the sidelines of the summit, President Irro held talks with officials from the UAE and DP World. The Somaliland government has not yet commented on Fiqi’s remarks regarding its leader’s participation in the high-level event.
