Suspected Al-Shabaab militants abduct five local chiefs in Kenya’s Mandera county

Monday February 3, 2025

Nairobi (HOL) – Suspected Al-Shabaab militants abducted five local chiefs in Mandera County, Kenya, on Monday while they were traveling toward Elwak, according to North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno.

The incident reportedly occurred between Bamba Owla and Ires Suki, areas frequently targeted by the militant group.

A joint security team has been deployed to track down the abductors and ensure the safe return of the local administrators, authorities confirmed.

The abducted chiefs were reportedly on their way to a meeting in preparation for President William Ruto’s visit to the region this week. Ruto is set to undertake a week-long tour of the North Eastern region, during which he will meet local leaders and assess ongoing development projects.

Ruto, accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, is expected to visit Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir Counties as part of the Kenyan government’s efforts to address regional development priorities and community engagement.
