Garowe (HOL) – Puntland Defense Forces have taken full
control of the strategic Wangable Well in the northern Qandala district of Bari
region, following a series of planned operations.
Puntland security officials confirmed to HOL on Friday that
ISIS fighters had been driven out of the area, which for years had served as an
important base for the group’s senior leaders, militants, and their families.
Wangable Well, which provides water even during droughts,
became a stronghold for ISIS in 2016. The surrounding mountains and natural
caves offered concealment, while the reliable water source made the location
habitable.
Reports indicate that ISIS fighters have abandoned the well,
though their current whereabouts remain unknown. Security sources believe they
may have retreated into nearby mountain areas.
The site’s proximity to the coast had allowed the group to
move supplies and weapons with ease. From Wangable, ISIS dispatched teams to
carry out roadside attacks and bombings, particularly in the Toga-Jeceel area,
where military convoys were frequently targeted.
Intelligence sources said ISIS returned to Wangable in late
2024, initially bringing women and children before later moving fighters and
heavy weapons, following a February 11 airstrike by Puntland forces that
severely weakened their positions in the region.
