Mogadishu (HOL) — A senior Jubbaland police commander was
killed Monday in fierce fighting between Somali federal troops and Jubbaland
regional forces in the border village of Tuulo Amiin, near Beled Hawo in the
Gedo region, local sources and security officials said.
Colonel Hussein Giif, Jubbaland’s police commander in Gedo,
died in the clashes, according to multiple security sources. Jubbaland
officials have not yet issued a formal statement, though the region’s minister
of internal security confirmed the commander’s death.
The minister condemned what he called a “heinous act” by
government forces and expressed condolences to the people of Jubbaland and the
commander’s family. He urged that those responsible be brought to justice.
Reports from the scene indicate other Jubbaland soldiers
were killed or wounded. Federal forces are said to have seized weapons,
military vehicles, and captured soldiers from the regional troops, later
displaying the prisoners.
The Somali federal government has not commented on the
operation, and further details are expected in the coming hours.
The deadly confrontation comes amid escalating tensions in
Gedo, where government and Jubbaland forces have repeatedly clashed over
control of key border areas with Kenya.
