Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali police on Thursday seized 189
cartons containing a wide range of narcotics and illicit pills at Aden Adde
International Airport in Mogadishu, in an operation conducted in coordination
with the Office of the Attorney General.
In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office said the
seizure was part of an intensified national campaign to combat drug trafficking
and safeguard public health and security. The operation reflects enhanced
vigilance and improved security measures at Somalia’s primary entry points.
“These drugs, which pose a serious threat to public safety,
were intercepted upon arrival at Aden Adde Airport and seized before they could
be released into circulation,” the statement read. “Formal investigations are
now underway to uncover the networks behind the importation and ensure those
responsible are brought to justice.”
Authorities have yet to identify the group or individuals
behind the smuggling attempt, and no one has claimed ownership of the seized
shipments.
The Attorney General’s Office praised the coordinated
efforts of security forces, describing the operation as a significant step in
the government’s broader efforts to dismantle narcotics trafficking networks.
“The confiscated items have been secured, and a full
investigation is ongoing,” the statement added.
The latest interception underscores the Somali government’s
commitment to cracking down on illegal drug activities and protecting its
citizens from the harmful impact of narcotics.
