Somali court sentences six for human trafficking as migrant deaths mount

Wednesday April 30, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — The Banadir Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced six individuals accused of operating a human trafficking network, following the conclusion of a multi-day trial that highlighted the growing crisis of illicit migration in Somalia.

Court Chairman Salah Ali Mohamud announced that Mohamed Jimale Raage and Mohamud Ali Hassan were each sentenced to two years in prison. In addition, both were ordered to pay compensation in the form of 50 camels to the families of four women who died during the trafficking process.

The court also directed them to reimburse the full amounts they had collected from the victims' families.

Four other defendants—Abdiwahaab Nur Mahdi, Ibrahim Abdi Ibrahim, Walid Abdullahi Abuukar, and Abdiqani Mohamed—were each sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of participating directly or indirectly in the trafficking operations.

The ruling comes amid a sharp rise in human trafficking cases in Somalia, with smuggling networks increasingly targeting vulnerable youth and adults seeking better opportunities abroad. Many of those smuggled face dangerous journeys, with hundreds of Somali migrants having died en route to countries in North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.

Somali authorities have pledged to step up efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and prosecute those responsible for endangering the lives of citizens under false promises of opportunity.
