Mogadishu (HOL) - The Court of Appeal of the Banadir region concluded the second hearing of the case and the defense of Sayid Ali Moalim Daud on Sunday, who had previously been sentenced to death for burning his pregnant wife to death.
The court stated that it would announce the final decision, but did not specify a date.
Lawyer Ali Halane, representing Daud, expressed hope that the appeal court would issue a different decision from the one made by the Banadir regional court. Halane argued that if they are dissatisfied with the judgment of the Court of Appeal, they will appeal to the Supreme Court of the country. He believes that the accused man did not burn his wife.
Deputy prosecutor Yahye Mohamud Said asserted that Sayid Ali was the culprit who burned his wife, stating that there is a need for the court to announce the verdict. He added that information from doctors, witness reports, and burns on the accused's body prove Daud's guilt.
The high-profile case has garnered significant public interest in Somalia, with the community closely monitoring developments. However, the highly anticipated decision of the appeals court is expected to be announced this week.
The victim, Luul Sheikh Abdiaziz, was a respected employee at Aden Abdulle International Airport and a mother of six. She died at Erdogan Hospital from injuries sustained in the blaze, which prosecutors allege was ignited by Daud following a domestic argument.
